A Birthmother’s Need for Representation

TruAdopt • August 8, 2016

A birthmother placing her baby for adoption should have her own legal representation, separate from that of the adoptive parents. Unfortunately, in the majority of adoptions it’s only the adoptive parents who have an attorney. TruAdopt seeks to ensure that birthmothers understand the legal process and have an opportunity to pose important questions to an attorney whose sole responsibility is to advocate for her. While adoption is definitely a collaborative effort between adoptive parents and the birthmother, it’s essential that all parties be fully informed of their rights.
