Susan Romer’s career as an adoption lawyer makes her ideally suited to the mission of Truadopt – to provide legal and related services for pregnant women who are thinking of placing their expected child for adoption.
For more than 25 years before retiring, Susan represented adopting parents as senior and managing partner of the Bay Area law firm then known as Adams & Romer. Throughout that experience, she never lost sight of the other side, the emotional struggle and anxieties endured by birthmothers during the adoption process.
Having seen first hand how these women needed help to get back on their feet, financially and emotionally, after placing a child for adoption, Susan founded a nonprofit organization, aptly named “On Your Feet” to help them do exactly that through financial aid, scholarships, counseling and peer support.
Susan is also a co-author of an article on birthmothers that appeared in Adoptive Families magazine. The article included an in depth study sponsored by the foundation designed to identify the post placement needs of birthmothers and to evaluate the impact of the services offered by the foundation.
Susan was an active member of the Academy of California Adoption Lawyers as well as American Academy of Adoption Attorneys. She was also honored as recipient of the congressional “Angel in Adoption” award.
Susan graduated from Barnard College of Columbia University in New York, earned her master;s degree at Northwestern University, her Ph.D. from the University of
California, Berkeley, and law degree from Golden Gate University in San Francisco. She and her husband are a blended family of five children and nine grandchildren, one of whom joined the family through adoption.
our message to you
“Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of representing hundreds of birth parents and adoptive families. In 16 years of practicing adoption law, I’ve witnessed both the beauty and the pain of adoption. While I truly love my work in adoptions, I believe there is much room for improvement in the way we do adoptions in this country. With the launch of TruAdopt, we have committed to employing best practices in each adoption process in an effort to facilitate child-centered adoptions that are both legally and ethically sound.”
Celeste made sure me and the baby’s father had the support we needed at the end of my pregnancy and especially at the hospital. Adoption is complicated and I don’t know how I would have gotten through it without that support.
